Shining

Dark, depressing, doomy, heavy as fuck black metal from one of Sweedens best. Halmstead, Shining's 5th album showcases their transition from straight black metal to the current progressive-extreme black metal. Tons of acoustic guitar interludes, solos, screams of all sort, and some crazy time signatures. As for the lyrics they are pretty tough to understand...because they are in sweedish, but they deal with death and suicide and all that metal shit. The Opeth of black metal!

La Dispute

Incredible record here, in this guys opinion the greatest of the year. This post-hardcore bands first full length album is one of the greatest debut albums ever. Singer, Jordan Dreyer, leads the mood of the music with his stress filled scream passionately reciting his poems. The album a story of a man betrayed by his woman and his rage perfectly fits the bands sound. Dreyer's songwriting is among the best in this era. Get it and kill a bitch

Blues

Blues is a mathmetalhardcoresludgecore unit with a simple heavy sound. This album is led through the rhythm section, BASS AND DRUMS! Following along is a few guitars playing heavy as fuck and a vocalist who switches from growls to wails. Each short track is its own shot of chaos and energy. Open Wide!

Electric Wizard

The Wizard are like the grungiest, heaviest aspects of old Sabbath grinded into the doomiest sludgiest release of the year so far. The vocals sound like something from satan himself and guitar tone from the time of nothing. Pulls you into it!

The Soundcarriers

Reminiscent of late 60's psychedelic stuff. Along the lines of Tame Impala vs. Jefferson Airplane. I mean talk about reverb heavy guitar and some hazy vocals from singer, Leonore Wheatley. fuckin awesome

Jeff Buckley

Such beautiful soulful music. Born November 17, 1966  and released Grace, his only complete album in 1994. It was immediately revered as one of the greatest works in music. Buckley had such a strong powerful bluesy and raw voice and his talent leaves to wonder where music would be if he were still around. On May 29, 1997 Jeff Buckley went for a swim in the Mississippi River (fully clothed and not under the influence) and drowned. This is a must listen!

Miike Snow

This is for those who are fond a Passion Pit but are disturbed by Michael Angelakos' voice.

Miike Snow - Mike Snow (I couldn't find a Mediafire link and am too lazy to make one so you are going to have to settle with Megaupload)

The Goner

The Goner, a psych-folk group formed in 2008, brings one of the most meaningful albums of the year with Behold a New Traveler. This whole record has a haunting vibe and when you listen to it you just know something important is happening. The kind of music that makes you wonder if your still living.

Death

This post is not about Death the death metal band. However this band would have been just as influential and ahead of their time...had this record been released when it was made. Death was punk before punk was punk..formed in 1971! They were not only groundbreaking by creating their own style, they were also black. The trio recorded For the Whole World to See in 1976 but the recorded companies refused to release it under the band name Death. The album was left unfinished with only 7 songs and the surviving songs were released in 2009. Death is a band that would have been remembered as pioneers in music, and this album would be a milestone.

Tallest Man on Earth

Folk. This is soooo much fun to listen to. This music would feel much better if it were summer and you were relaxing with an Arnold Palmer.

The Sea and Cake

Such fun and happy music. Their music sends you into an extremely chill trance. They are an indie group with a strong hint of jazz. Your gonna wish this band was the soundtrack to your entire life.
